“America’s Got Talent” Hypnotist

Here is the whole clip from the May 26, 2015 episode of “America’s Got Talent” when Howie Mandel got hypnotized. And here is a segment from the Today Show where Howie talks about his experience. This is the exact sort of thing that does so much harm to the art of hypnosis. It scares people away from learning how to use their minds.

In this talent show, one of the contestants hypnotized judge Howie Mandel. Howie has been very outspoken for years that he is germophobic and does not like to touch anyone. This hypnotist puts Howie into a light trance, and makes Howie believe that everyone else is wearing gloves. So while he is in the trance, he has no problem shaking hands with everyone. Something that he never does – he finds it repulsive and disgusting.

“America’s Got Talent” Abused The Art Of Hypnosis

This was all done for entertainment purposes, but what did he accomplish? All he did was use one lie to cover up the lies that Howie has been telling himself for years. Of course this was not a cure. He did so much more harm than good to people who don’t know what true hypnosis is. America’s Got Talent and this hypnotist just prostituted the art.

This method is by no means a therapy or a cure. The way to help and treat Howie is to use hypnosis to let him see and learn the truth – that there is nothing really to fear. He’s lived his whole adult life living in fear. So scared that some germ might infect him. And this hypnotist just covered up that lie with another lie. If Howie really wanted to rid himself of his fear of germs, he would use hypnosis to let all of these fears go. And be relaxed, clam, confident, and at peace.

Now Howie is skeptical – and feels betrayed that the hypnotist would do that to him. And how many other people watching now have a negative view about hypnosis? When you go to a hypnotist, you are entrusting your most valuable possession – your mind. A good and qualified hypnotist will never treat you with lies. This is the sort of nonsense that scares people from true hypnosis. And it bothers me that this is what people think of when they think of hypnosis.
