There is a difference between a placebo and the placebo effect. A placebo is defined as “a substance having no pharmacological effect but given merely to satisfy a patient who supposes it to be a medicine.” A common placebo that we’ve all heard about is the “sugar pill” – an inert pill that does not affect the body chemistry in any way.
The placebo effect is the result when the patient cures himself because of his belief in the placebo.
The History Of Pharmaceuticals Is A History Of Placebos
When I talk about the placebo effect, I am not talking about the actual placebo. It does not matter what the specific placebo is. It could be a pill, an injection, a tonic, a food, surgery, or anything that the patient will believe will cure him. Something as simple as a mother’s kiss for a young child can heal the boo-boo and stop the pain.
Even the colors of the pills are so important for how effective they are. You can read this article to learn more.
The more harsh the disease, the harsher the treatment. A simple malady may only require a pill or a spoonful of cough syrup. A more serious disease often requires powerful pharmaceuticals that contain chemicals that have harmful side effects. These drugs are not sugar pills – they are made up of strong materials.
But the cure is in the belief that the medicine will work.
The Placebo Effect – A Change Of Belief
We have all been conditioned to believe that we can be cured by drugs and surgery. That is the placebo effect. The true cure or healing of disease is a change in belief. If you’ve been conditioned your whole life that pills will heal you, the best way to cure you is to give you a pill. If you believe it will require powerful pharmaceuticals, then the drugs will be the best treatment for you.
The most important thing is that the treatment changes your belief. If you truly believe you are being cured, you will be cured. Your mind can cure disease and heal physical ailments. Learn to use your mind the correct way – and have the placebo effect work for you.
